'But I began to think of time as having a shape, something you could see, like a series of liquid transparencies, one laid on top of another. You don't look back along time but down through it, like water. Sometimes this comes to the surface, sometimes that, sometimes nothing. Nothing goes away.'

The uncanny...

I distorted the photographs to create new images. I like how they became quieter and more sublime. You can spend time looking at them without the initial shock that comes from viewing the original photographs. I think this creates a strange and unexpected intimacy between the viewer and the subject matter. I began to look at Freud and his writing on the uncanny. He says 'the term 'uncanny' applies to everything that was intended to remain secret, hidden away, and has come into the open'. I think this definitely applies to Scarlet!
